I’m Experiencing a Dental Emergency! What Do I Do?
July 4, 2020
Dental emergencies are inconvenient, scary, and it’s difficult to know what to do. You don’t want to rush to the dentist with an unnecessary issue, but you also don’t want to leave something potentially serious untreated. Fortunately, your dentist in Far North Dallas discusses what you should do depending on what your emergency is. Continue reading to learn when it’s necessary to visit the office for an urgent appointment.
Toothache
This issue can be a sign of many different things. Some examples include teeth grinding, gum disease, tooth decay, or even more serious problems. Something that many dentists recommend is the 3-3-3 method. Take three Advils (600 mg in total), three times a day, for three days. You should definitely call your dentist and set up an appointment as soon as you can.
Cracked, Chipped, or Broken Tooth
If it’s only a small crack, it’s likely that you will need a filling. If it’s a more serious one, you could require a crown instead. Either way, make an appointment to see your dentist sometime within the next few days.
Knocked-Out Tooth
If your tooth gets knocked out completely, pick it up by the crown instead of the root. You don’t want to cause additional damage to the tissue. Carefully rinse it off if it appears dirty and place it back into the socket facing the correct direction if you are able. If you cannot, place it in a small container with milk. You want to ensure that the tooth stays moist. Call your dentist and let them know that you are coming into the office. The likelihood of saving the tooth decreases significantly after an hour.
Tooth Abscess
It can be difficult to tell if you have an abscessed tooth without being examined by a dentist. But it’s definitely a possibility if you’re experiencing temperature sensitivity, severe tenderness while chewing, or spontaneous pain. If you think you are having this issue, call your dentist and make an emergency appointment. If you wait too long, you may end up with facial swelling and could develop severe systematic complications.
Gum Abscess
If you notice a pimple-like bump on your gums that appears to be yellow, white, or red, you should call your dentist immediately. You may require antibiotics or other treatments to get rid of the infection.
Swelling of the Face
If your face is swelling up, this is a sign of a serious infection that could be life threatening if left untreated. See your dentist as soon as possible!
If you’re unsure if you are having a dental emergency, give your dental office a call. They would be happy to give you any guidance regarding your issue and let you know if it is necessary to come into the office. Just remember to remain calm. Your dentist will do everything he can so you can get back to focusing on your busy life!
