4 Ways to Keep Your Child’s Teeth Healthy During the Cold & Flu Season
February 10, 2022
Believe it or not, toddlers and young children are likely to contract up to eight colds per year. This can manifest into long cycles of nose-blowing, fevers, and coughing during cold and flu season. While some parents have come to accept and expect their child’s frequent illnesses, there are many ways to reduce health risks. Below, a dentist in far north Dallas will lay out a few ways you can tweak your child’s oral health routine to protect them during the cold and flu season. These strategies will help alleviate some symptoms and health risks associated with overall physical and oral health.
1—Gargle with Warm Salt Water
While sick, your child may suffer from a sore throat, painful swallowing, and a swollen tongue. Not only does gargling alleviate these symptoms, but it can eliminate germs within your child’s mouth. Garling may not be their favorite activity, but explaining how the action can protect their teeth and gums while reducing pain may motivate your child to try it. If they are hesitant, maybe offer a sugar-free popsicle or an episode of their favorite show as a reward.
2—Conquer Dry Mouth
Dry mouth can put your child at risk for cavity development. It can quickly develop when your child is not adequately hydrated. This can be challenging when they are sick because they may lose their sense of taste or interest in food and drinks. Additionally, some common medications could be worsening the problem. Encourage your child to drink plenty of water and hot herbal teas to conquer dry mouth. Offer them sugar-free cough drops to stimulate saliva production.
3—Counteract Sugary Syrups
Many flu syrups marketed to children are loaded with sugar. If some that thick, sugary syrup remains coated on their teeth, this can irritate your child’s gums and put them at risk of tooth decay. Ensure that your child drinks plenty of water after the syrup to counteract this effect. Additionally, keep up a regular oral hygiene routine to protect their teeth and gums.
4—Replace Toothbrushes
Once your child feels better, it’s essential to replace their toothbrush. Lingering bacteria on the toothbrush could threaten to reinfect your child if reused once they are well. During the initial switch, wash your child’s toothbrush with hot water to kill any potential bacteria after each use.
When your child suffers from the flu or a cold, speed up their recovery and protect them from further infection by prioritizing their dental health. Their healthy smile will thank you for it.
