5 Tips for A Healthy Smile During Summertime

Summertime, sweet summertime—get ready for warmer weather, poolside fun, and long days filled with adventure! But while you’re out and about and enjoying yourself, something important to keep in mind is your oral health! There are many things that could potentially jeopardize your smile and derail your summertime fun, including some of the things you drink! Here are some tips from your dentist in Duncanville to help you maintain a bright and healthy smile this summer.

1. Drink Plenty of Water

When it comes to beverages, nothing beats water; it is the absolute best drink for your teeth (and your whole body, for that matter). Drinking water throughout the day helps to keep your mouth hydrated and stimulates the natural flow of saliva. This also helps to wash away plaque-causing bacteria while freshening your breath!

2. Pick Tap Water When Possible

Although bottled water is extremely convenient, especially when you’re on the go, you should try to drink tap water whenever possible. Tap water often has fluoride added to it, which is good for your teeth! Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that strengthens the enamel on your teeth, increasing your resistance to tooth decay.

3. Avoid Soda and Carbonated Drinks

It can get pretty hot during the summertime, so an ice-cold soda or refreshing lemonade might seem like a great idea. But sodas and other sugary drinks can lead to tooth decay, cavities, and stained teeth! Any carbonated drink is potentially problematic, as the acidity can damage and wear down your enamel—and once your enamel is gone, it’s gone for good!

4. Use A Straw When You Can

Drinking through a straw can greatly reduce the amount of contact between your teeth and sugary or carbonated beverages. This can make a noticeable difference when it comes to preventing tooth decay. Also consider finishing your drinks quickly, rather than slowly sipping them over a period of time.

5. Try Drinking Tea

Certain teas actually have health benefits that are often overlooked; for example, green tea contains compounds that suppress bacteria, which in turn can slow down the development of tooth decay and gum disease. Just be mindful of the sugary additives that are often found in tea—these are still harmful!

It’s easy to get distracted by all the fun adventures and escapades that occur during the summertime, but don’t get so distracted that you neglect your oral health! These tips can help you protect your smile and keep it beautiful so you’re able to fully enjoy yourself.
