Tips for Preventing Summertime Dental Emergencies
May 12, 2022
In a perfect world, accidents wouldn’t happen—but unfortunately, this isn’t the case. Things like dental emergencies can happen when you least expect them to, and they can be quite frustrating and inconvenient—especially if they happen during the summertime! But luckily there are many measures you can take to protect yourself and reduce your chances of experiencing a serious problem. Here are five tips from your dentist to help you avoid a dental emergency this summer.
1. Schedule A Dental Checkup
It’s important to visit your dentist twice a year for regular checkups and cleanings; so why not schedule one of those visits for the summertime? This gives you a large and flexible window to fit in as many appointments as necessary for you and your family—and if you have children, you don’t have to take them out of school! But more importantly, this allows your dentist to inspect your mouth and ensure that you have no oral health concerns prior to your summer escapades.
2. Prepare A Dental Emergency Kit
This one is straight out of the Boy Scout’s handbook: “Be prepared!” It never hurts to be prepared and having an emergency kit ready in the event of a dental emergency is a wise move. It doesn’t have to be anything huge or expensive, but you should at least include the following basic supplies:
- A card with your dentist’s information (including their emergency number).
- Gauze and handkerchiefs.
- Saline solution.
- A small container with a lid (for knocked-out teeth).
3. Stick to Healthy Summertime Snacks and Drinks
Those long, summer days can get pretty hot—and it might be tempting to indulge in sweet, ice-cold treats like sodas, popsicles, sno-cones and more. But these items can greatly increase the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and other serious problems! You should consider avoiding things with excessive sugar and opt for healthier alternatives: fruits, vegetables, yogurt, cheeses, and more. Also be sure to drink plenty of water; water keeps you and your mouth hydrated while also helping to clear out any lingering food particles and bacteria.
4. Practice Sports Safety
If you enjoy summer sports and games, you should be sure to wear the correct protective gear. Something like a mouth guard can help to protect you from serious mouth trauma including chipped and fractured teeth, cut lips, or even displaced teeth. This is especially important if you have braces; your oral appliances need protection, too!
5. Keep an Eye on Your Oral Health
It’s never a bad idea to regularly monitor your oral health; most of the time, your dentist isn’t around and it’s up to you to ensure that things look and feel healthy. Establish and maintain good oral hygiene habits and closely inspect your mouth daily. As soon as you notice a problem or encounter a dental emergency, contact your dentist; inaction will only lead to further complications!
Summertime is meant to be enjoyed, and a dental emergency will certainly throw a wrench into any fun plans you have! Take care of your smile this summer by implementing these tips.
