Tips for a Healthier Smile During National Dental Hygiene Month
October 8, 2023
October is National Dental Hygiene Month, which is dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of keeping your mouth clean. You only get one set of permanent teeth and every tooth is essential for a healthy smile. Simple mistakes can increase your risk of tooth loss. You can safeguard your smile using 5 tips to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
1. Brush After Every Meal
Your toothbrush is your first line of defense against preventable dental problems, like cavities. The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth at least twice daily for two minutes. Ideally, strive to brush after every meal. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to clean all surfaces of your teeth. Don’t forget to brush your tongue where bacteria and food residue can linger.
2. Commit to Daily Flossing
Although your toothbrush is effective, it can’t reach everywhere in your mouth, like between your teeth. Brushing alone can leave up to 40% of your teeth surfaces uncleaned. Plaque and tartar can accumulate if you aren’t careful, which can lead to gum disease. Flossing is the only way to clean areas your toothbrush can’t reach. It’s best to use waxed dental floss at least once per day.
3. Limit Sugars and Starches
Resisting your sweet tooth can be difficult, but it’s best to limit sugary treats. If you enjoy a salty snack, your dentist will also recommend cutting back on chips and other starches. Sugar and starches feed cavity-causing bacteria that can erode your enamel. Although your enamel is strong, it isn’t indestructible and it can’t regenerate. With 92% of adults having experienced tooth decay, it’s better to choose nutritious foods to support a healthy mouth and body.
4. Don’t Ignore Bleeding Gums
Red, swollen, and bleeding gums are symptoms of gingivitis, which is the earliest stage of gum disease. Not only is it a leading cause of tooth loss, but gum disease is also connected to various health issues, including heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and diabetic complications. If you have any signs of gingivitis, contact your dentist right away for an appointment.
5. Schedule a Dental Checkup
Brushing and flossing are effective in keeping your mouth minty fresh, but you should also see your dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and checkup. Besides removing plaque and tartar buildup, your dentist will monitor your dental health to look for anything concerning. Early detection and treatment are essential for preventing tooth loss and other dental problems.
It’s never too late to revamp your oral hygiene habits. A few changes to your routine can keep your smile healthy and beautiful for a lifetime.
