Thanksgiving Troubles: 4 Foods That Can Stain Your Teeth
November 14, 2023
It’s Thanksgiving, and that means a ton of tasty treats to enjoy! Whether you’ve been looking forward to mashed potatoes and gravy or pumpkin pie, there are plenty of delicious dishes to sink your teeth into. Your dentist wants you to keep in mind, however, that there are some foods commonly found around the table that are notorious for staining your teeth. Keep reading to learn about 4 popular foods to avoid in order to keep your teeth sparkling during your holiday gathering this year.
Food #1: Cranberries
If you typically pile up the cranberry sauce, you might want to reach for a green salad, instead. Cranberries are known to stain more than just your clothes. Also, if you’re eating them in their natural form, the seeds can get caught in your teeth. That gives cavity-causing bacteria a chance to multiply which can lead to cavities and decay.
In addition to this, cranberries are acidic which means they can contribute to wearing down the natural, protective enamel of your pearly whites. If you want to keep your teeth clean then opt for fresh vegetables, instead. Leafy greens are higher in calcium, which gives them an extra boost rather than breaking them down.
Food #2: Wine
While you might correctly assume that red wine can leave your teeth looking drab, did you know that white wine can also cause discoloration? Not only that, but it’s acidic enough to erode the enamel, too. While you might still enjoy it in moderation, remember to chase it with a glass of fresh water to stay hydrated and flush your mouth clean.
Food #3: Coffee
Many people wake up early on Thanksgiving to get started with the day’s cooking. Often, that includes enjoying a fresh cup of coffee for a well-deserved caffeine boost. Though it might put a pep in your step, coffee also contains tannins which are known to dim your teeth. Teas and other dark drinks like soda do, as well. If you want to keep your grin in top condition this year, steer clear of too much of this beany beverage.
Food #4: Balsamic Vinegar
There’s nothing quite like a balsamic glaze on your vegetables to really bring out their flavor, but unfortunately, it’s not so great on your teeth. Like the other foods on this list, it can leave them looking dingy. While you’re probably okay to eat in small amounts, remember to be careful how much you consume.
Now that you know what foods to avoid, you can keep your smile shining bright throughout the entire holiday season!
