Clouded Judgement: 4 Oral Health Risks of Vaping
March 29, 2024
Vaping has been marketed as a safer alternative to traditional smoking and has gained popularity among both youth and adults. While it’s often promoted to reduce harm from smoking, new research suggests that vaping poses its own risks. In fact, it has been shown to be particularly harmful to oral health. If you’re curious how vaping affects your teeth, continue reading.
1. Dry Mouth
One of the most common side effects of vaping is dry mouth, also known as xerostomia. E-cigarettes and vaping devices contain ingredients like propylene glycol and glycerin, which can reduce saliva production.
Why does that matter? Well, saliva helps maintain your oral health by rinsing away food particles, neutralizing acids, and protecting against tooth decay. Persistent dry mouth can increase the risk of cavities, gum disease, and even oral infections!
2. Gum Inflammation
The chemicals in vape clouds can irritate the soft tissues in your mouth, leading to inflammation and irritation. This can show up as redness, swelling, tenderness, and even bleeding gums.
If your gums continue to be exposed to these irritants, it may contribute to periodontitis, a serious oral health condition that can lead to tooth loss if left untreated.
3. Accelerated Tooth Decay
Vaping liquids often have high levels of sugar in their flavorings, which can fuel the growth of harmful oral bacteria. When these bacteria feed on sugars, they produce acids that attack tooth enamel, leading to cavities and decay.
At the same time, some “vape juice” also contains acidic chemicals that can further weaken tooth enamel. This makes vaping a double whammy for your teeth, causing them to erode much faster!
4. Oral Lesions
Though there is still more research to be done, initial findings suggest that vaping can cause lesions in the mouth. The Institute for Oral Health says they have found a connection with vaping and several oral issues like:
- Nicotine Stomatitis also known as “smoker’s palate” that scars and stains the roof of the mouth.
- Hairy Tongue, a condition that discolors the tongue with a dark coating.
- Angular Cheilitis, sores in the corners of the lips.
What Can You Do to Protect Your Oral Health?
To safeguard your oral health, consider the following tips:
- Limit or quit vaping altogether to reduce your risk of oral health issues.
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water to combat dry mouth.
- Practice good oral hygiene habits, including brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and visiting your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings.
So, while vaping may seem like a harmless habit, it can have truly detrimental effects on your oral health. By being aware of the risks and taking steps to protect your teeth now, you can maintain a healthy smile far into the future! Don’t let clouds of vapor obscure the importance of your oral health.
