Here’s What to Know About Oral Cancer Awareness Month
April 12, 2024
April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, making it a great time to learn about this dangerous condition and how it can be treated early. While you might not think of your dentist as being on the front lines of the fight against cancer, the truth is that they play a key role by screening their patients for signs of oral cancer and referring them to specialists if they find anything. In this way, dentists have saved many lives. Here’s what you should know about oral cancer as well as a few signs that you should have your mouth checked out by a dentist or doctor.
Oral Cancer Comes in Two Varieties
Oral cancer is a blanket term that describes two different conditions which are:
- Oral cavity cancer: These cancers affect the lips, cheeks, gums, teeth, the front part of the tongue, and the floor and roof of the mouth. These cancers can be harder to treat, making early detection crucial.
- Oropharyngeal cancer: This type of cancer can be found in the parts in the back of the mouth such as the throat, tonsils, and the base of the tongue. This form of cancer is often easier to treat than oral cavity cancer.
What Are Some Warning Signs of Oral Cancer?
While your dentist plays a big role in detecting oral cancer, it’s important to be on the lookout for symptoms yourself. Feel around your mouth and neck from time to time to search for lumps or abnormalities, and consult with your dentist or doctor if you find anything. A few key signs to look out for in your mouth include:
- A persistent sore or irritation
- Flat white or red patches on your tongue, gums, or lining of your mouth.
- Numbness, tenderness, or pain in your lips or mouth.
- A knotty mass such as a lump, crust, or rough spot.
- Difficulty with speaking, chewing, swallowing, or moving your jaw or tongue.
- Your teeth fitting together differently when you close your mouth.
- Loose teeth or dentures
- A feeling of something stuck in your throat
- Hoarseness or another change in your voice
How Can I Prevent Oral Cancer?
Males and older people generally have a higher risk of developing oral cancer. The best ways to prevent oral cancers include refraining from using tobacco in any form and drinking alcohol in moderation or not at all. Throat cancers have also been linked to the human papillomavirus, which can be vaccinated against.
While oral cancer is rare, it is also dangerous. Your dentist plays a crucial role in protecting you from these conditions, making it all the more important to attend regular dental appointments.
